The shift from Junior Division 2 to the much competitive Junior Division 1 category and the long four hours travel appeared no problem for the Gen. Santos City-based Holy Trinity College Wildcats.
HTC tamed Stella Maris Academy, 88 - 79 in the Juniors Division 1 category of the 6th Gaisano South Cup late Saturday afternoon at the GS Skygym.
Ryan Paul Sunio came out as the best player of the game for HTC canning 14 points on top of six rebounds, three steals and 2 assists.
Excell Neon Nocos and Ian Cris Gumawid chipped in 14 and 12 points respectively for HTC which was elevated to Junior Division 1 after its players showed adequate talent to compete in the premier division.
The wards of Pol Torrijos, who departed the Tuna Capital at 9 a.m. and arrived Davao City barely two hours before the scheduled 3:45 game, appeared patchy in the first two quarters but came out strong in the second half to notch the victory.
After taking 40 - 38 lead at the half, HTC went on fire in the second half to barge into the winning column in the tournament sponsored by Unilever, P&G, Abbott and Sunsport.
Stella, the 2002 champion, fought hard but just could not keep pace to the much taller Wildcats. But they had a hard time to defend Stella’s go-to-guy Nico Clyde Te.
Te, who wowed the crowd with his shooting prowess, scored 27 points including 5 triples. He went 5 of 10 at behind the arc.
Nico was the younger brother of Nelson Te who steered Stella Maris to its first ever GS Cup title in 2002 along with now San Beda College Red Lion John Paul Escobal.
