Southern Philippines Polytechnic College survived a fiery Ateneo De Davao U last minute surge to pull away with a 53 – 51 victory Sunday night in the 6th Gaisano South Cup Junior Division 1 at the GS Skygym.
The Ateneans waxed hot in the pay off period, wiping out SPPCI’s double digit lead midway of the fourth quarter, but just fell short to absorb their first setback.
With the score at 53 – 51 with eight seconds left, Jannus Gio Bulseco had the chance to win the game for Ateneo which was trailing all throughout.
Bulseco who had 10 points found himself open at behind the arc following a broken play but the prolific forward undesirably missed the shot before the final buzzer.
Forward Ronald Bangoy had a double-double performance for SPPCI drilling in 13 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
Jess Linus Evangelio paced Ateneo with 15 points.
Unlike the junior’s team, Ateneo de Davao University-Team A past Stella Maris Academy, 75 – 20 in the Girl’s division match.
Reigning Most Valuable Player Trisha Anne Piatos lived up to her star billing scored 14 points and dished out 4 assists to open Ateneo’s title retention bid on bright note.
Piatos, who led Ateneo to championship last year, drilled 9 of his total points in the opening canto where Ateneo established a commanding 25 points advantage, 29 – 4 after ten minutes of play.
Krystine Cloe Timtim and Tara Araneta chipped in 14 and 8 points respectively for the Juan Carlo Salvador mentored Ateneo girl’s Team A.
In other matches, defending junior’s division 2 champs St. Therese College of Science and Technology demolished Ford Academy of the Arts, 102 – 61.
In Mini division, University of Immaculate Conception defeated Ateneo de Davao University, 67 – 58 while Holy Child School of Davao trounced Magallanes Elementary School, 81 – 49.
